The easy access to Ecuador’s mountains makes this country an attractive destination for beginning climbers to experienced mountaineers alike. Consider scaling the Chimborazo, the highest mountain of the country, whose summit — due to its location along the equatorial bulge – is the Earths closest point to the sun. Or, ascend Cayambe, the only volcano in the world whose summit is crossed by the equator. Want something even more technically demanding? …consider Mount Antisana, less frequented and thus retaining its pristine beauty. Whichever summit you choose, Ecuador possesses a range of mountaineering challenges.

Best Time to Experience Ecuadorian Mountain Climbing

Surtrek has found that the best mountain climbing season in the Ecuadorian highlands is from October to February. This is when the best combination of elements are present; as this is the Ecuador highland’s dry season, the days are sunny and the nights clear, the snowcap has stabilized, and sufficient snow cover forms on glacier ice – all contributing to a better climbing experience. June to August is the second best but somewhat less desirable climbing season here.

What you’ll experience on a Mountain Climbing Vacation in Ecuador

Arriving in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito, you will be met at the airport and privately driven to your upmarket hotel. Continually accompanied by a Surtrek guide, you will first go through an acclimatization process of easy climbs that will prepare you to ascend higher mountains and volcanoes. As for the logistics of your stay, Surtrek South American Travel has carefully selected mountain accommodations in world-class Quito hotels, character-filled haciendas, eco-lodges or small family-owned hotels. We also dedicate great care in picking expert climbing guides who will introduce you to incredible climbing destinations. Focus on your adrenaline rush as you reach the summit of your own adventure …Surtrek will take care of all the rest.

Getting to Ecuador

Arriving at Quito’s new Mariscal Sucre International Airport, you will be met by a Surtrek representative and driven to your upmarket hotel or lodge. As most of the more popular climbing sites are within 35 miles of Quito, it’s likely that your initial stay will be in the capital city itself. Later, as you head out on your climbs, you will be accompanied by an experienced Surtrek climbing guide and driven to your respective base camp(s).
